Bridge views and the Falls of Lora: a coastal village with serious character
Connel is a small but well-loved village five miles north-east of Oban, strung along the southern shore of Loch Etive where it meets the sea. The 1903 cantilever bridge that gives the village its name carries the A828 over the loch's narrow mouth, and beneath it the Falls of Lora form one of the most photographed tidal races in Britain. It's a postcard village with proper local character, popular with both retirees and remote-working professionals who want sea views and quick access to Oban.
What Connel is like
The village runs along the A85 with most properties either on the loch side or up the hill behind. The Falls of Lora (where the tide rips in and out of Loch Etive through a narrow channel) are visible from the main road and become genuinely dramatic on a spring tide. There's no large village shop, but the Falls of Lora Hotel, the Oyster Inn and a couple of smaller establishments give Connel a proper local pub-and-restaurant culture. North Connel, across the bridge, is home to the small Oban Airport.
Property in Connel
Connel's housing stock is varied: traditional sandstone Victorian villas along the loch, post-war bungalows on the back streets, a handful of modern detached homes, and the occasional croft on the village edge. Loch-view properties carry a clear premium and tend to draw interest beyond the immediate Oban market, including buyers from the central belt and further afield. The village's small size keeps supply tight, so well-priced homes here rarely linger.
Why people choose Connel
The views, the village character, and the proximity to Oban. Five miles is close enough that the high street and the ferry are a 10-minute drive, but far enough that Connel keeps its quieter, more rural feel. It's particularly popular with people who want the postcard Highland location without committing to true remoteness.
